What is soft robotics?

Soft robotics uses compliant materials and structures to create movement and controlled contact. The material, shape and method of actuation work together to determine how a component bends, changes shape or supports a load.

Our cells replace static materials with dynamic systems designed to support performance, mobility, and everyday life. They can be arranged into surfaces and structures, with sensing and control developed around the behavior a product needs.

A useful starting point is the physical task: what should move, what will it touch, and how should it respond? Those requirements guide the cell geometry, materials, actuation and integration.

A connected development process.

  1. 01 / Design

    Define the behavior.

Start with the application, operating conditions and product constraints. Explore the cell geometry and arrangement around the movement or contact you want to achieve.

  2. 02 / Simulate

    Explore the response.

Use the platform to examine materials, loads and actuation. Compare computed behavior as the design develops and identify what needs to be tested physically.

  3. 03 / Manufacture

    Develop the physical system.

Bring materials, assembly and manufacturing decisions into the development process. Refine the cells and their connections through physical testing.

  4. 04 / Integrate

    Build into the product.

Connect the soft robotic structure with sensing, embedded software and control. Work through the mechanical and system interfaces around your product requirements.

Design with manufacturing in mind.

A soft robotic design brings several decisions together: material behavior, cell geometry, actuation, connections and assembly. Manufacturing is part of developing that system, from the first cell through to product integration.

morph works with partners across the platform and foundry. Simulation, physical testing and manufacturing requirements inform one another as the design develops.
